* In 1998, the Republic of Belarus, together with the world community, observed the 200–th birthday of Adam Mitskievich, a great poet of Belarusian background, whose works had a tremendous impact on the development of Belarusian literature.
Being the founder of revolutionary romanticism in Polish literature, Adam Mitskievich had been closely tied with his native land – Belarus. He highly valued folklore, described hard everyday life of ordinary people, calling the Belarusian language "...the most harmonic and the least changed language compared with other Slavonic languages". His works reflect themes and personages suggested by life and history of Belarusian people.
